712th Tank Battalion

Honoring the members of America's Greatest Generation that served in the 712th Tank Battalion during World War II. The 712th Tank Battalion, activated 20 Sep 1943, received 5 Campaign Stars for combat in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. The battalion landed at Utah Beach on 28 June 1944 as part of the 1st Army under the command of General Omar Bradley. The 712th took part in the difficult hedgerow fighting in Normandy and the breakout from St. Lô - Périers. Attached to the 90th Inf. Div., the 712th spearheaded the dash across France by the U.S. 3rd Army under the command of General George S. Patton, Jr. The 712th was a vital element in the Allied forces at the Falaise Gap that entrapped the German 7th Army. It participated in the siege of Fortress Metz, crossing the Moselle River and assaulting Fort Koenigsmacher. The 712th then crossed the Saar River into Germany at Dillingen. The battalion came back across the Saar and was part of Patton's relief force for the besieged Town of Bastogne; it engaged the enemy during the Battle of the Bulge. The 712th then helped breach the Siegfried Line, and crossed the Moselle again. It crossed the Rhine and cut through the heart of Germany and into Czechoslovakia, where it met up with the Russian Army. It guarded the captured Nazi treasures at the Merkers Salt Mine, and helped liberate the Flossenburg concentration camp. By the end of the war in Europe, the 712th had spent 311 days in combat. After V-E Day on 8 May 1945, the 712th served in the occupation force at Amberg, Germany before being deactivated 27 Oct 1945.
