Navajo Code Talkers

Today, the Dine' Nation has lost a true warrior who was the last of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers who helped create an unbreakable code during WWII. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family at this time. (Chester Nez)The Navajo Code Talkers were among many Indigenous Code Talkers who served in World War II. It was the Indigenous languages, the very languages many of us were forbidden to speak while attending school as children, that helped the Allied forces efficiently defeat the Axis powers in the Pacific Ocean theater of the war. The code that was created by these young, brave Diné naabaahii (warriors) has never been broken. The Navajo Code Talkers served the United States military to protect our people, land, culture, traditions, and way of life. They understood the power in language and used that as their shield in defending their homelands. Each part of their uniform holds significance and meaning to their identity as Dine'.I have had the honor and privilege to have met many of our Navajo Code Talkers and share many hugs, laughs, and songs of appreciation for who they are and what they stood for.Ahe'hee' Shinaa baahii Dine'e' for your courage to protect Indigenous Nations, the sacred land, our beautiful cultures, powerful languages, and way of life. Your legacy will live on forever in our hearts.
