St. Ann's Asylum, St. Louis, MO

St. Ann’s Orphan Asylum stood at the northwest corner of Page and Union from 1904 until the late 1970s, when it was demolished. The Daughters of Charity cared for babies who had been placed for adoption as well as those who merely needed care until their parents could re-establish themselves or regain their health. For those babies who were essentially in foster care the parents paid a little money for their upkeep if they could. By the age of three, however, if a child had not been adopted or returned to his/her parents they would be placed in one of the other orphanages usually St. Joseph's (for the boys) or St. Mary's (for the girls).
