ERNEST H. SCHWEITZ was born January 27, 1918, in Belgrade, Nebraska, to Herman and Martha (Hellbusch) Schweitz. He passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Oakland Heights in Oakland, Nebraska, at the age of 94 years.

Ernest attended school through the tenth grade. He stopped attending school in 1934, as the eldest of five children; he was needed on the family farm. In 1937-38 Ernest worked on farms and orchards in Texas, Missouri, Minnesota and Nebraska.

In 1940, Ernest was the first man drafted from Nance County to serve in World War II. On December 28, 1943, Ernest married Doris Eileen Blaser of Belgrade, Nebraska, while home on leave before sailing for Europe. He was honorably discharged from the Army on November 21, 1945, after serving in England, France, Belgium and Germany. Ernest and Doris were reunited two years after they were married. They moved to Burt County, Nebraska, to work for an uncle on the farm. They farmed together for 59 years and raised four sons, Ronald, Terry, Arlan and Kenneth. In October 2000, they retired and bought a home in Oakland. Doris passed away September 11, 2007.

Ernest was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Martha; wife, Doris; daughter-in-law, Dawn (Baxter) Schweitz; grandson, Reed Schweitz; brothers, Theodore and Raymond; sisters, Wilma and Edna

He is survived by his sons, Ronald of Hendersonville, NC, Terry (Christie) of Rockford, IL, Arlan (Beth) of Elkhorn, NE, Kenneth (Ximena) of Oconomowoc, WI; sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Thursday, October 25, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland.

BURIAL: Oakland Cemetery

MILITARY HONORS: Ryan VFW Post No. 5543, American Legion Post No. 46

VISITATION: Wednesday 4 -8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 - 8 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation Thursday will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
