United States Army Sergeant Steven Lester Taylor, 23, 3738 East Pleasant Run Parkway, North Drive, was killed November 5 during combat in Vietnam, it was announced yesterday.
Sergeant Taylor died when the helicopter in which he was a door gunner crashed following a mid-air explosion. He was assigned to D Troop, 17th Cavalry, First Aviation Brigade.
Sergeant Taylor, a paratrooper, had made the Army his career and was serving his second tour of duty in Vietnam.
He had been cited several times for heroic action and saving the lives of fellow soldiers. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and several Air Medals. He also was awarded the Vietnamese Cross for Galantry and several Purple Hearts.
A native of Downs, ILL., Sergeant Taylor and his family moved to Indianapolis 13 years ago. He attended Arsenal Technical High School.
Services were held at 3:00 PM Monday in the Harry W. Moore Peace Chapel, with burial in Washington Park East Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 PM today.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Cathleen L. (Cathy) Taylor; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. Bishop, all of Indianapolis, and the grandmother, Mrs. Mary Dearth of Downs, Ill.
