LOYD GLENARD WHITE

"POP" "GRANDAD"

January 5, 1908 ~ August 2, 1999

Services: Thursday, August 5, 10:00 am, Hillcrest Memorial Park

Born to William and Martha (Calvert) White, the youngest of four sons, near Warrior, Alabama (as Pop used to say, "in Flea Holler"). Pop dropped out of school in the sixth grade because the teacher sat next to him all day long and she was "too pretty." He went to work instead and always said he never took a nickel he didn't work for. This included riding the rails "hoboing" and looking for work during the Great Depression. After moving through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona following the crops, farming and working as a cowhand on a ranch near Mundy, Texas, his family settled in the Texas Panhandle town of Slaton where he met his love Lona Townsend. Adored by her sisters as the "handsomest man in the world" and followed like puppies by her brothers, he married Mom November 15, 1935 at the court house in Lubbock, Texas.

L.G. and Lona's 4 children were born in Slaton. Dad worked for Underwood Compress and after moving to California with his family in 1950, he worked for Calcot in Bakersfield until his retirement in 1973.

Pop and Mom were the original taxi service for their kids and all of their friends. They were never too busy to take them to football, baseball, basketball practices and games. Pop was always available to hit flies and play catch with his kids.

After Mom passed away in 1973, Pop made his home with his daughter and her family. His grandkids were his joy and his reason for living. The blessings the children received from their Grandad will be with them forever. They remember every one of his stories from carrying the mash up the "holler" to his dad's and uncle's still to the songs he would make up as he took his walks around the block. The neighbors looked forward to hearing him and talking to him as he made his way down the street.

Pop was predeceased by his beloved wife "Jo", parents and 3 brothers. As his legacy and gift to this world, he leaves his sons and their wonderful wives Loyd and Joann of San Angelo, Texas; Gene and Margie and Don and Dona of Bakersfield and daughter Sue Cierley of Bakersfield. Grandchildren Sandra and Steve Meyers of Aurora, Colorado; Burt and Kim White, Nashua, NH; Rhonda and Dan Butler, Slaton, Texas; Mickey White, Bakersfield; Vickie Cierley and fiancée Kevin Ellis, Bakersfield; Paul and Robin Cierley, San Diego, California; Kim and Dan Grijalva; Tena and Steve Collup; Steve and Laurie Hopper; and Beth and David Walker, all of Bakersfield.

Great grandchildren Shatzie and Shane Meyers, Aurora, Colorado; Michael and Jonathan White, Nashua, NH; Daniel, Kelly and Molly Butler, Slaton, Texas; Isaac Grijalva; Levi Crownover; Nicholas, Neil, Benson and Brady Hopper; Austin White all of Bakersfield; and Tori and "baby" Cierley, San Diego.

Pop also leaves his very, very special sister and brother-in-law Wanda and Bo Patterson of Fresno, and many nieces and nephews.

Thank you Pop and Grandad. We will remember you always.
