Architect. Known as George Dance the Elder. He worked as City surveyor and architect in London, from 1735 until his death in 1768. His most famous design is the Lord Mayor's neo-Palladian Mansion House at Bank, in the City of London. Other surviving buildings of his in London include St Botolph-without-Aldgate, which he rebuilt after its destruction in the Great Fire of London in 1666, St Matthew's Church, Bethnal Green and St Leonard's, Shoreditch (called the Actors' church, as some of Shakespeare's actor friends are buried there). He also designed buildings in other parts of Great Britain, including the Town Hall in Coleraine, Northern Ireland which he built in 1743. George had three famous sons, James, actor and playwright, Nathaniel, painter and the renowned George Dance the Younger, architect and founder member of the Royal Academy. He is buried in St Luke's in Old Street, just north of the City of London. He was a vestry member of this church, but not, as many believe, the architect of it. The credit for that goes to Nicholas Hawksmoor, Sir Christopher Wren's assistant.
