Betty Maycock, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street with her daughter and granddaughter by her side.
A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, November 3rd, at Grace Lutheran Church,
52nd Street and Urbandale Avenue in Des Moines, IA. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for 60 years. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the church. A private burial will be held at Resthaven Cemetery.
Betty was born in rural Boone County near Madrid on February 20, 1926 to Roy and Ruth (Wassgren) Johnson. She moved with her family to a farm near Bayard where she graduated from Bayard High School in 1943. Betty then spent four years living in Ames working at Iowa State University. She moved to Des Moines in 1947 and was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She met her husband William "Bill" Maycock while they were members of the Bell Telephone Chorus. They both loved music and singing. Bill and Betty were united in marriage on May 5, 1951.
Betty was an accomplished seamstress, tailoring beautiful dresses for her daughter's special occasions and she took such joy in teaching her daughter to sew. The last 23 years after her husband Bill passed were spent devoted to caring for her family and being "best friends" with her daughter.
Betty's greatest happiness was her family, especially her granddaughter and two great-grandsons. She had such a tender heart and was always there to cheer their victories, providing unconditional love and support. Betty enjoyed the last year of her life at Edgewater Brookside Assisted Living in West Des Moines where she made many friends during that time.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Karen L. Crooks of West Des Moines; granddaughter, Lesley Torres of Des Moines; great-grandsons, Elijah William Torres and Daniel Curtis Pollard, Jr. of Des Moines; sisters-in-law, Josephine Johnson of Madrid, IA and Elaine Johnson of Tulsa, OK; along with many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Maycock, her parents and her brothers, Donald Johnson and Arnold Johnson.
