William was born in Danville, Illinois, prior to the family moving to Hoopeston, where he graduated from Hoopeston High School in 1966. He was an only son.
He enlisted in the Marines in the 3-month delay program 3 November 1967, at a Chicago Recruiting Office and reported to San Diego MCRD 15 February 1968 for basic boot camp.
William arrived in Vietnam 30 July 1968 and was assigned to Headquarters Company where he was with a Sniper Battalion, before joining 3rd Platoon with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division.
At approximately 1211H, while Echo Company was conducting a sweep along the DMZ, near Hill 158, when 3rd Platoon was ambushed with automatic weapons fire from a group of NVA soldiers. William died as a result of a fragmentation wound to the head from an enemy rocket propelled grenade, 6 kilometers southwest of Con Thien and 9 kilometers northwest of Camo Lo, while participating in Operation Virginia Ridge. At the time of his death Gooden was the squad leader of Alpha Squad, 3rd Platoon.
William was single and served his country for 1 year, 3 months and 28 days and was KIA # 42,970.
He had been in Vietnam for 10 months and 13 days.
William was 20 years,7 months and 10 days old.
Survived by his parents; Willard Eugene and Mary Helen Gooden and his 2 sisters; Cathryn A and Mary Jane of 325 Washington Street, Hoopeston, Illinois.

His father served with the Marines for 4 year during World War II and left the Marines as a SSgt.
