Robert's parents were Press McPherson Smith and Ann Elizabeth Lesesne Smith of SC.
Robert graduated from Charleston College and was a part owner in a wholesale grocery store. Later he went into the lumber and turpentine business.
Robert's wife, Mary, died when their youngest child was only 2 years old. Robert's sister, Anna Elizabeth Lesesne Smith, moved in with the family to help raise the youngest children.
He served in C.S.A. during the Civil War and was a Captain, Quarter Master, 27th S.C. Infantry. He fought alongside his two sons, Robert Jr and S. Porcher Smith, during the War. He was shot in the thigh in the Battle of Secessionville, near James Island, SC. He also came down with typhoid fever twice during the War. After his wife, Mary, died he stayed on in SC for several years working with his sons, S. Porcher and his 3rd son, James "Gaillard" Smith, in the timber and turpentine business until the market slowed. He then moved to Santa Rosa, CA, to be closer to his sons, Robert Jr and "Gaillard". He died in Santa Rosa and is buried at Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery, near Robert Jr's tombstone.
