William Lyon McKenzie was born in Canada on February 13, 1839 the son of Duncan and Jennie Hamilton McKenzie. William served in the Civil War. Soon after he came to Holmes City where he homesteaded. William was married 3 times: Susie; Maggie and Anna. In 1899 William sold his farm in Holmes City Township and moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota where he died December 21, 1906. Known children - with Maggie: Jennie L., Anna and Maggie J.; with Anna: Allie, Mamie and Lizzie.
Note: daughter Mamie born 1890; died 1916, Urness Twp., Douglas County; buried Oakland Cemetery, McLeod County with her mother.

Wm. McKenzie, the old Holmes City settler and veteran of the civil war, is dead. Such was the news telephoned from Kensington last Saturday.
William McKenzie was born in Illinois on February 13, 1839. He served in the civil war, soon after the close of which he came to Douglas county and settled on a homestead near Holmes City. He lived on the farm until 1899, when he sold the place and moved to Hutchinson, which he has since made his home. The deceased had been in poor health for many years. Death came last Friday evening. The remains were brought to Alexandria last Monday by J. H. Benjamin, and interred in the Pocket Lake cemetery beside other members of the family. Mr. McKenzie's wife died December 7, preceding him but a few days.
The deceased leaves two brothers, J. H. and Robert McKenzie, one in Washington state and the other in Oklahoma, two sisters and five daughters--Mrs. Henry Oberg of Kensington, Alice of Hutchinson, Mamie, who lives with Mrs. Oberg at Kensington, a daughter at Hoffman and one in South Dakota.
The deceased was a member of John F. Reynolds post No. 51, of Alexandria, during his residence in this county. The members of the post had charge of the arrangements for the funeral.

INDIAN WAR VETERAN DEAD
William L. McKenzie Follows His Wife to Other Shore. Was Pioneer of Minnesota and Member of Famous Hatch's Battalion. Burial at Alexandria.
William L. McKenzie died at his home east of town last Friday evening, his death following that of his wife just two weeks. Mr. McKenzie had been a long sufferer from asthma, and his death was not unexpected.
The deceased was one of the pioneers of the state, coming here in 1857 from Illinois where he was born to Scotch parents. He served during the Indian war in Hatch's famous battalion with honor and distinction and after the close of the war settled near Alexandria.
He was married three times, his marriage to Miss Benjamin occurring twenty-six years ago. Seven years ago he moved to Hutchinson and has lived here ever since. He leaves five children and two brothers, Robert McKenzie of Everett, Wash., and John McKenzie of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, and the remains, accompanied by his brother-in-law, J. F. Benjamin, were taken to Alexandria for interment, where the deceased held a membership in Reynolds, Post, No. 51, G. A. R. Rev. J. F. Pickard officiated at the funeral services in this city.
