She was born in Smethport, PA on April 6, 1916, the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Rose [Sporer] Masser. Mrs. Hughes resided and attended school in Smethport until 1927, at which time the family relocated to Clearfield, PA, where she graduated from Clearfield High School in 1933. She and her family at that time moved to Niagara Falls, NY and for several years she worked in the family business of Frederick J. Masser & Son Awnings in Niagara Falls, NY.
In 1935, Mrs. Hughes married William Hughes residing in Niagara Falls, NY, Bradford and Erie PA, before moving back to Niagara Falls in 1937 and then to Lewiston in 1949. Mrs. Hughes was a lover of nature, enjoyed gardening and photography. She was a member of the Cataract Camera Club, the Golden Bison Alumnae Association of Clearfield, PA and was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, where she served as Circle Leader and on the Session.
Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Bruce (Linda) Hughes of Lewiston; two daughters, Darlene A. (Austin) George of Baltimore, MD and Bonnie M. (late James) Kirby of Fall River, MA; also 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Josef F. and Paul E. Masser.
