Donald Ransom Florian, 85, of Torrington, passed into heavenly rest on Oct. 26, after a brief illness. Born in Winsted, he attended local schools, and graduated from the Gilbert School.
As a boy during the Depression, Don, like many youngsters, took odd jobs to help his family; delivering newspapers, selling magazines door to door, delivering for local shops, and working at the Strand Theater, with his mother. During World War II, as a teenager prior to his enlistment, he volunteered with others at the watch tower atop the Soldier's Monument, even on school nights, watching the night skies over Winsted for possible enemy aircraft.
After serving in the Army's 27th Airdrome Squadron from 1945-47, Don graduated from Bentley College in Boston. He returned to Winsted, and worked for Waring Products for 42 years, retiring in 1992 as Accounting Manager.
Don was known for his good nature, humor, kindness, sincerity, graciousness, and loyal friendship, to those blessed to know him. He was a sponsor of young people for Junior Achievement during his years at Waring Products, and treasurer of the Litchfield County Horse Club, and the Northwest Ct. Dog Club. He loved animals, and raised horses, and dozens of dogs with his late wife Janet, the last being their beloved greyhound, Zachary.
Don was raised by his loving mother, Hazel Ransom Florian, and devoted aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Besides his wife, Janet Abeling Florian, he was predeceased by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and James Draper, and dear friends, Ruth and Raymond Church. He was always a loyal friend to Dr. Church, helping him with any animal in need, especially nights.
He will be greatly missed by Susan and Mark Caufield, who gave him the respect of a father, and tried to give him the best last years possible.
Friends may pay respects on Sat. Nov. 3, 10:30 to 11 a.m., at Maloney Funeral Home in Winsted, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m., Forest View Cemetery in Winsted, with Father Andrew Draper officiating.
