Mrs. Mary Venable is the daughter of Hezekiah & Granville (Haynes) Dodge. Her mother was born in Botetourt County, VA, to Joseph Haynes, a native of England and his wife Jane who was born in Ireland. The father of Mrs. Venable was born near Pompey, NY, received a good education, studied medicine & was graduated from an institution in New York City. He located in Sweet Springs, VA, but afterward removed to Augusta, GA, where he made his home 6 years. October, 1826 he came to this State, traveling in a wagon & bringing with him 4 slaves whom he afterward disposed of. He located in Edwardsville, but a year later became a resident of Pleasant Hill Township. He practiced his profession until too old to do so. He owned a large tract of land and erected 2 mills: a gristmill & sawmill, which were among the first built in the township.
In politics Dr. Dodge was first a Whig and then a Democrat. He was a member of the Baptist Church & his wife of the Church of Christ. Dr. Dodge died January 29, 1873, at the age of 76 years & his wife, October 8, of the same year & at the same age. They reared 8 children, named respectively, Emerine S.G., DeLeon L., Ann Eliza, Sebred F., Josephine, Clinton, Mary J. and Seba A. The parents of Dr. Hezekiah Dodge were Ezra & Mary (Foote) Dodge, natives of Ireland & Wales respectively, who died in the Empire State.
