16B2 Jabez 4 BIGELOW, oldest son of Gershom 3 ( Joshua2 , John1 ), and Rachel (GALE) BIGELOW, was born 4 Oct 1726 at Weston, Middlesex, MA. He seems to have been named after an uncle who returned to live in Bristol England and left descendants there according to family traditions. He early went to CT, and lived in Colchester and Hebron. At Hebron he was married to Susanna ELDERKIN 10 Oct 1752. Descendants say she was married previous to her marriage to BIGELOW. Research finds her first husband was Isaac AVERY b. 26 MAR 1717, md. 31 MAR 1742 in Groton, New London, CT, had one dau. Prudence Avery b 1743, then Isaac died 8 NOV 1744.

[Discrepancy: She is also assumed to have remarried to Ralph Stoddard in Groton, CT on 3 Apr 1846 and died there. See FindaGrave.com memorial 51679022. There were four Susanna(h) Avery's in CT at that time. Resolve discrepancy]

Jabez & Susannah lived in Hebron until 1780 where all their ten children were born. Then, removed to Pittsfield, MA, where in 1780 he bought 60 acres in what is now the center of the town. Tradition says his land included a large elm tree which stood in a town park in the late 1800's. They became members of a church in Pittsfield which recorded their names and birth dates. Some have misinterpreted those church records to mean the children were born in Pittsfield. However, the youngest, Gale, was 14 when they arrived in Pittsfield. In 1785, Jabez sold his 60 acre farm in Pittsfield and removed a few miles west to the Kings District of Albany County, NY where he owned a 600 acre farm known as Bigelow Flats. Jabez is reputed to have been the earliest settler of that location. When Jabez died in 1808, his farm was divided equally among his three sons. All three, Joshua, Jabez Jr., and Gale remained on their 200 acres for the rest of their lives. He had seven daughters: Susanna, Esther, Sarah, Rachel, Charlotte, and twins Elizabeth and Mary. Today, after more changes in boundaries, that land and Bigelow Family Cemetery is in West Lebanon, Columbia, NY. His wife died there 16 Apr 1797, and he on 1 Dec 1808. Many Bigelow family members are buried on their land in the Bigelow Family Cemetery. Some graves no longer have headstones. (BigelowSociety.com)
