WESTPORT — Roger E. Smith, 85, lifelong resident of Westport, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at the CVPH Medical Center with his loving family by his side. He was born in Elizabethtown, March 10, 1927, the son of Walter E. and Rachel (Farnsworth) Smith.
Roger graduated from Westport Central School. Upon graduation he went to work on a local farm, which he later purchased. Roger met the love of his life, Janet Kozma, in 1951, at a square dance in Wadhams. They were married November 30, 1952.
Roger owned the Mountain View Farm where he operated a dairy, grew cash crops, and as a hobby, made maple syrup every spring. He was past Master of the Wadhams Grange; he and Janet were active members of the North Country Squares, and both enjoyed spending time relaxing and fishing year round on Lake Champlain.
After retiring from farming, Roger spent 25 years working in his garden, plowing snow, tending to his lawn, and helping friends and neighbors when they needed a hand. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, at home and at the family camp.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet; daughters, Carol Smith of Plattsburgh, Deborah (James) Smith-McMahon, of Jericho, Vt., and Nancy (William) Hunter of Orrville, Ohio; grandson, William (Tija) Hunter, Jr. of Lakewood, Wash.; granddaughter, Lindsay Hunter of Orrville, Ohio; sister, Doris Bodie of Westport; sisters-in-law, Margaret Carpenter of Glens Falls, N.Y., Lillian Dawson of Dracut, Mass., and Geraldine Kozma of Richmond, Va; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roger was predeceased by his parents.
There will be no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Westport Federated Church with Rev. Leon Hebrink, pastor, officiating. Burial will be private in the Black River Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Westport Emergency Squad, Westport Federated Church, or the North Country SPCA.
Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
