The son of William Puhse and Matilda Charlotte Behrendt, "Ben" married Gladys "Pearl" Buckley on 12 Jun 1915 in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois. They lived in Poag, Illinois and were the parents of 2 children.

Ben worked as a roller in a sheet mill early in their marriage.

Pearl died after a long illness in 1928 at the age of 30.

Ben raised their daughters on his own after Pearl passed away. He eventually took a job as a boilermaker at the Shell Oil Refinery in Madison County, Illinois. He was a member of the Boiler Makers local in Alton, Illinois.

He later moved the family to Granite City, Madison County, Illinois. He was confirmed at a Lutheran church there.

At the time of his death in 1954, Ben was 60 years, 10 months and 4 days old. He was survived by 2 daughters, Dorothy McCormick of Granite City, and Myrtle Hickman, also of Granite City; 3 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Steve Puhse of Granite City, and Tom Puhse of St. Louis, Missouri; and 1 sister, Theresa Fleet of Granite City.

Visitation was held at the Mercer Funeral Home in Granite City on 06 Dec 1954. Visitation continued there the following day and until the beginning of 2 p.m. funeral services on 08 Dec 1954. Ben was buried next to his wife, Pearl.
