Captain Asahel Joiner was born on Saturday, 22 June 1748 in Cornwall, Litchfield Co., Connecticut to William Joyner and Sarah Dewey. Asahel was named after his Uncle Asahel Dewey, Sarah's brother. At 20 years, Asahel married Eunice (last name unknown) in 1768 in Sheffield. Together, they had a large family of ten children {7 men, 3 women}. Asahel was a farmer and tilled the land, providing for his large family. For much of its history, Egremont has been an agricultural town, with only a small milling area around South Egremont. At age 27, Asahel fought as a minuteman from Berkshire county called to the service in the Siege of Boston in 1775 as the Revolutionary War began. He served as a sergeant and then a captain for a period of 8 years. Asahel died at age 82 years on 26 October 1830 in Moriah, NY, and is buried in the South Moriah Cemetery.
