Son of John Campbell McCroskey Bogle (1831-1903) and Elizabeth Cox Saffell (1841-1938). Physician. Received his M.D. from the University of TN medical school in 1891. Two years later, he moved to CA. He first married Sara Wallace Scruggs in 1895 in Pacific Grove, Monterey Co. She was the daughter of Rev. R. K. Scruggs (1837-c1867)and Isabella Dick Saffell (1844-1927). The couple moved to Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., where Samuel became a prominent physician. They had two children, Marion Meredith and John W. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1916, he took Bess van Alst Woodward as his second wife.
