BEGGS, James Washington (Private, Company A, 40th Alabama Infantry Regiment) Enlisted August 27, 1862 in Gainesville, Alabama in Captain C. S. Coats Militia for a period of 30 days (a 30 Day Man). Captured at Lookout Mountain on November 24, 1863; confined at Rock Point Island, Illinois prison; released after Lee's surrender. Died 1916 and is buried in the Prairie Springs Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas. James is living with his mother, Ann, in the 1850 US Census, Sumter Co., AL.

Beggs, Edgewood Enterprise, January 13, 1916: On the night of Jan. 4th, 1916, at 12 o'clock, J.W. Beggs, (who was commonly known as Grandpap Beggs,), passed from this vale of tears and sorrows to his reward in Heaven. Deceased was born in Green county, Ala. Oct. 29, 1835, being at his death 80 years, 2 months and 6 days old. He leaves 8 children to mourn his death: 3 sons, N.W. and G.R. Beggs, living near the old home in Van Zandt county, and J.H. Beggs of Mineola, TX; Mrs. Fannie Mitchel of Memphis, Tex.; Mrs. Dora Mitchell of Hudsonville, Miss.; Mrs. Bettie Tidmore of Mars, Tex.; Mrs. Della Blankinship of Tundra and Miss Jimmie Beggs, the youngest who remained single and stayed with her old father and cared for him with loving, tender care until God saw fit to take him home to Himself. In the year 1860 , deceased was married to Sarah C. Halsell and to this union was born 10 children, two of whom, Mary Ammons, wife of J.B. Ammons, and Robert Beggs died several years ago." He applied for Pension #16851 on 08 Jul 1909. According to a list from the Texas State Archives in Austin, this veteran was totally disabled. He died 04 Jan 1916 and was buried at Prairie Springs Cemetery.
