He was one of the Pioneer settlers of Cayuga County and thought to be possibly the oldest resident of Auburn, New York at the time of his death.

As an infant, he and his parents left Philadelphia for Salem, Washington County, New York to reside.

He was only eleven years old when the Revolutionary War started but in spite of his young age, he volunteered his services for duty and was assigned to be a sentinel for lookout of both Tories and Indians during the night vigils surrounding Salem.

In 1795, James moved to Cayuga County and established a farm in the Sennett area about three miles from Auburn. He was to spend most of his life here establishing himself as a good and industrious farmer taking care of his land and family.

However, when the War of 1812 was taking place, he accepted the commission of Captain of a company of Dragoons from Cayuga County and they fought in the lines. When General Scott returned from duty in Niagara, Captain Simpson was prevailed upon to transport munitions and stores to Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain as he was familiar with the area through which he would travel.

James was an advocate for the building of the Erie Canal and could envision its future as a great advantage to the state.

The Captain continued on his farm in Sennett until about 12 or 15 years before his death and took up residence in Auburn on Lewis Street.

He was married to Nancy Fowler, daughter of George Fowler of Salem, who predeceased him and they had the following children:

David C.Simpson born in 1791.

Mrs. Martha Simpson Kellogg born in 1793. (wife of Silas Kellogg of Ira)

Sarah Simpson Lewis born about 1795.( wife of Col. Levi Lewis)

Maria Elsie (or Elsie Maria) Simpson born about 1799 who married Samuel S. Robinson of Auburn.

Walter G. Simpson born in 1800.

Lovina Simpson born in 1804. She did not marry.

David W. Simpson born 1812.

Jane Simpson born about 1816. She did not marry.

ANCESTRY DATA----
James was one of four sons and several daughters of Alexander Simpson, Sr. who came over from Scotland and Patty (Martha) Turk. They lived first in Philadelphia, Pa. and then moved to Salem, Washington County, New York sometime in the 1760's. Alexander is reputed to be the first settler in Salem on the Black Creek.

Our James Simpson had three other brothers:

John Simpson who supposedly went to Canada to live.

Andrew Simpson (See #76895050) who married Rebecca McWorter, a daughter of Matthew McWorter.

Alexander Simpson, Jr. who supposedly moved to the same area as his brothers in New York. Probably #137116947 is his memorial.

A sister to the above was Martha Simpson (see #97880151) born 1769 in Salem who married David Carswell.
