The son of Douglas Hayes and Debora and David Reckley. He was graduated from the Living Word Academy in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania in 1998. He enlisted in the Army five days before the September 11 attacks in 2001. He died at Al Miqdadiyah, Iraq, when a bomb detonated near his military vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry of the 1st Infantry Division, based in Vilseck, Germany.
