First Lieutenant Owen J. Jones' remains were returned to the United States in 1949 after he had been killed in action in Germany. He was buried with full military honors on April 28, 1949 in Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta after services in the Woodward Undertaking Parlor.
He was born in Oneonta and attended school there. His home of record was listed as 236 N. Midler Ave. in Syracuse, New York. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941, and was eventually assigned to the 187th Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater of Operations. 1st Lt. Jones was one of four men killed by a tank mine in Waldfeucht, Germany on February 22 of 1945. Also killed with him were Technician Grade 5 Louis J. Combs, Corporal Allen K. Bodtcher and Private Novie N. Ross (from a bronze plaque on an outside brick wall of the building next to the Waldfeucht Windmill, dedicated on Sep. 20, 1986 by Charles E. McGuire).
He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Easter Jones Houser and his son, Roger Owens Jones, of Odebolt, Iowa, his mother, Mrs. Ethel Wilson, of Syracuse, and a brother, Alson B. Jones, of Oneonta (Syracuse Herald-Journal, April 29, 1949, p. 22).
