William was the son of Benjamin Gilhousen & Mariah Sprankle.


He married Sarah Ellen Clark at her father's farm home in Sugar Creek, Clark Co., MO. An article in the 2 May 1917 Los Angeles Times tells of their 50th wedding anniversary. The article about the celebration includes: "Twenty-five guests were present at the Gilhousen's celebration, including the six sons and daughters, who are C. E.,Will, L. S., Paul, A. A. and Bert Gilhousen, and Miss Ella Gilhousen of Portland and Miss Grace Gilhousen of this city."


William was a Civil War veteran, serving from Illinois.
