Civil War Veteran.

Hiram S. Faunce was born in Jay, Maine, in 1844, the fifth child of Alvin and Sarah (Ellis) Faunce.

He was a 19-year old shoemaker in Randolph when he enlisted in Company B, Massachusetts 1st Heavy Artillery Battalion on 22 Oct 1863. Mustered out on 29 Jun 1865.

At the age of 22, on Oct. 27, 1869, he married Hannah E. Clark of Randolph. He was employed in the boot factory for $650 per year. At the time of the census in July 1870 he and his wife and 2 month old child Estella V. Faunce were living in Randolph with his wife's parents.

By 1880, he and his wife and two children, 10-year old Estelle V. and 8-year old Edward E. were living in their own home in Randolph. Hiram was still working at the boot factory.

In the 1890 census of Civil War veterans, he was 42, and it was noted that he suffered from chronic rheumatism and "crippled legs."

In 1900, he was 52 and living on a farm that he mortgaged in Randolph. He was widowed, and had his four children living with him: 29-year old Edward E. who worked with him as a "market gardener," and 18-year old Harry A. and 16-year old Frank E. who worked as "farm laborers" on the farm. He also had his 15-year old daughter, Ella A. in his household.

By 1910, he was 62 and living in the home of his son-in-law, Arthur V. Aldrick, on West Street in Randolph. His son-in-law was employed as a heel shaver at a shoe shop, and Hiram was employed as a janitor at a bank.

In 1920 he was 72, living on his own on Lafayette Street, and still working as a janitor at a bank in Randolph.

In 1930 he was 82, living with his daughter and her son on Liberty Street in Randolph. His 45-year old daughter worked in the shoe factory and her 20-year old son worked odd jobs.

He died at 95 years of age on November 15, 1939.
