His two wives were Martha Matteson Potter (1761–1784) and Vialaty Andrews Potter (1753–1830). During the Revolutionary War in 1778, he was a 1Lt. in the Vermont Rangers where he guarded the frontiers and was involved with seacoast defense; attached to Capt. Samuel Robinson's Company of Col. Samuel Herrick's and LtCol. Ebenezer Walbridge's Vermont Militia Regiment. Also, a Private in Capt. Ebenezer Allen's Company of Vermont Rangers.
