Son of James Cornelius Cowles (1858-1927) and Martha Adeline England (1861- ), he was one of 12 siblings all born in the Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma. He moved west to California where he became a switcher for the railroad in Roseville, however, he spent most of his life as a painter and a carpenter. Outside of spending three years in Richmond, California during World War II, in the shipyards, he spend the rest of his life in Chico, Roseville and Grass Valley, California.
