Mrs. H. F. Andrews Dies at 58 in Canastota Home
CANASTOTA - Mrs. Ethel Hoyt Andrews, 58, died Tuesday at her home on Route 5, west of this village, after a two months illness.
She was born in Weedsport, Dec. 2, 1896, a daughter of Benedict and Sarah Moll Hoyt. After graduating High School she attended Syracuse University where she took library training. She also attended the University of Chicago.
Mrs. Andrews studied voice at Syracuse University and participated in music circles there. She was active in civic morning musicales and for several years sung with the double quartet at Syracuse First Presbyterian Church.
She also reorganized the library of that church. Her interest in dramatics took her into the field of religious drama and she was Instrumental In organizing the dramatic group in the Syracuse church. Mrs. Andrews reviewed plays and was a member of the Social - Literary Club of Syracuse. Mrs. Andrews was active in Girl Scout work, first as a leader and then as a member of the Girl Scout committee of Canastota. She later served as program chairman of the Madison County Girl Scout Council.
Surviving are her husband, Harland F. Andrews; her mother, Mrs. Sarah Hoyt, 94, Weedsport; a daughter, Miss Sally Andrews, Boston; five sisters; Mrs. Winifred Goodelle, Mrs. Irene Sheldon and Mrs. Eva Putnam, all of Weedsport; Mrs. Mary Baar, Winnetka, Ill., and Mrs. Doris Barnes, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Harold Hoyt, De Witt.

daughter Sara Elizabeth Andrews born 5 Apr. 1932 in Syracuse, NY had married Mr. O'Connor and now resides in Milwaukee, WI.
O'Connor began to practice Soto Zen Buddhism in 1986 under the teacher Tozen Akiyama. She took the precepts (the Buddhist code of ethics); was ordained as a priest in 1994; and received dharma transmission (the passing of teaching from master to pupil, establishing the pupil as a teacher in an unbroken spiritual "bloodline" of teachers ) in 1999. A few years ago, she officially changed her name from Sara to Tonen, the name that was given to her by her teacher.
age 89 in 2021.
