Hezekiah FREEMAN was born on 16 September 1745 in Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey. He died in 1812 at the age of 67 in Brutus, Cayuga County, New York.
There are two issues which cause confusion in documenting Hezekiah and his family; one is the reorganizing of the cities and counties in the area where he lived and the other is the presence of another Hezekiah Freeman in the area and each of them having a son Hezekiah. Following the list of events below is a brief summary of those issues.
His baptism is recorded in Morristown, New Jersey Baptisms and Morristown, New Jersey Presbyterian Church Records as 16 September 1745 so probably his birth date is before that but for now his birth date is recorded herein as same.
The Pennsylvania Gazette, page 166, No. 2429, 12 July 1775; Morris County, Court of Common Pleas records, "Notice is hereby given to the respective creditors of Benjamin Day, Nathaniel Day and Hezekiah Freeman, insolvent debtors."
On 7 August 1775, as recorded in, 1941 Gardner and citing Morris County Court Records, 6:230, it indicates Hezekiah Freeman petitioned the Morris County Court to take advantage of the act for relief of insolvent debtors. He assigned all of his real personal estate to Joseph King, who had been appointed by his creditors. He was discharged from prison by Judges Ford and Tuthill.
In 1796-1797, Juliette Freeman Lafferty in her Freeman History, records Hezekiah Freeman removed from Newark to Onondaga County, New York a part which in 1799 becomes Auburn, Cayuga County, New York.
In the 1800 Census of Aurelius (later Brutus), Cayuga County, New York he was listed as the head of a household with one female under the age of ten, two males and two females between the ages of ten and fifteen; one male and one female between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five, and one male and one female over the age of forty-four. Listed on the same page are his sons Isaac and Silas.
In 1802 he is listed in Elbridge (formerly Camillus), Onondaga County, New York Congregational Church records as one of eleven founding members of the church and one of the first two deacons. The Freeman Families of New England records this as 1800 and also it records that in 1804 he was chosen one of the first two deacons of the church.
In January 1806 he was dismissed from the Elbridge Church to go to Brutus and on 8 January 1806 he joined the Brutus (later Sennett), Cayuga County, New York Congregational Church as one of the founding members and on 3 November 1806 he was elected one of the two presiding officers at the first meeting of the Church.
In the 1810 Census of Brutus (later Sennett), Cayuga County, New York he was listed as the head of a household with one male of age ten to fifteen, one male of age sixteen to twenty-five, one male of age twenty-six to forty-five, one mal over forty-five, two females of sixteen to twenty-five, and one female over forty-five. He lived within nine houses of his sons Isaac and Silas as well as a Warner Freeman (relationship, if any, unkown) and a John French, the latter possibly a brother-in-law of his son Silas.
The following two paragraphs are found in the Abstracts of Wills, Administrations and Guardianships in NY State, 1787-1835 in Administrations, Auburn N.Y. Surrogate Jul 7, 1932 and are located in two different sets:
"Set 570: Page 161, adm of the Estate of Hezekiah Freeman late of Town of Brutus Co. Cayuga, died intestate. Granted to Nathan Fisher of Sd Town as Admos. Seal 20 Sept 1814 (for bond see item at top of next serial)"
"Set 571: Page (no number), bond adm of the Estate of Hezekiah Freeman late of Brutus, decd. Bond by Nathan Fisher, Nathan Bullock & Cephas Sheldon All of Brutus, Co. of Cayuga, in sum of $500. Dated 20 Sept 1814. Above Nathan Fisher the Admos (for adm see page 161 serial 570 set)" [ Note: Nathan Bullock, father of Mehetebal Bullock, wife of John Freeman, son of Hezekiah. Cephas Sheldon, wife of Hannah Freeman, daughter of Hezekiah. As of 2009, no knowledge of Nathan Fisher ].
In the publication Freeman Families of New England, Robert Freeman did a thorough research on the presence of multiple Hezekiah Freemans in the area where our Hezekiah lived. He wrote, "The 1800 and 1810 federal censuses show a Hezekiah Freeman living in Brutus, Cayuga County, New York. The size of his family and the presence of two of his grown sons as heads of neighboring households leave no doubt that this was Hezekiah Freeman [1745], who had come from New Jersey. There was a Hezekiah Freeman who was living in Bridport, Addison County, Vermont. Born 30 May 1775 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut, this latter Hezekiah was the son of Hezekiah Freeman [1740]. His father [1740] died at Norwich, so the younger Hezekiah [1775] was the only one living at Bridport. The records of the First Congregational Church in Brutus, New York show the admission on May 10, 1811 of Mrs. Electa Freeman, wife of Hezekiah Freeman, Jr. Hezekiah Freeman [1775] of Vermont had married Electa Curtis/Curtice/Curtin in 1799 at Bridport. Since his father [1740] lived until 1816, he would have been referred to as "junior'. Hezekiah Freeman (1745] died at Brutus in 1812. Among his children was a son named Hezekiah who was born in 1793, but the family history by Lafferty says that he did not marry. From this information it appears that Hezekiah [1775] and Electa Freeman may have come to Brutus in 1811 and lived there for a few years. The Cayuga history says that he died there (part of Brutus became Sennett in the 1830's), but all we know is that there was no Hezekiah Freeman in either New York or Vermont by 1820, nor is there any further record of Electa Freeman. From the available information, it appears that both Hezekiah Freemans [1745, 1775] did live in Brutus, Cayuga County, New York.
Additionally, the other Hezekiah (1775) is mentioned in a Cayuga County history: "Settlements were made by Jacob Hicks and Benjamin Miller, Revolutionary Soldiers, Jabez Remington, Hezekiah Freeman and Jeremiah Johnson. .... Hezekiah Freeman, also from Vermont, a shoemaker, settled about a mile east of Sennett, ... where he died."
It is recorded clearly that our Hezekiah came to central New York from Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey. Once there his location becomes confusing. One record has him settling in Onondaga County a portion of which becomes Cayuga County in 1799 and another has a Hezekiah settling in Cayuga County in 1797 but indicates it is the Hezekiah from Vermont. The Robert Freeman analysis above on the Hezekiahs clearly indicates the 1797 settler was not the Hezekiah from Vermont. Since the 1800 census clearly has our Hezekiah in Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York this writer strongly believes that Hezekiah did not settle in Onondaga County or he settled in Onondaga in 1796 (or prior) and then relocated to Aurelius in 1797. The town of Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York was formed 27 January 1789. In the 1800 Census Hezekiah is in Aurelius. On 30 March 1802 Brutus, Cayuga County, New York was formed from a portion of Aurelius. In the 1810 Census Hezekiah is in Brutus. On on 19 March 1827, Sennett, Cayuga County, New York was formed from northern Brutus and southern Aurelius. Confusing his location are the church records. He was a founding member of a church in Camillus, Onondago County in 1802 and then in 1806 he was dismissed to form a church in Brutus, Cayuga County. From these records, we can choose between the family traveled from Brutus to Camillus between 1802 and 1806 to attend church or that between the census of 1800 and 1810 the family lived in Camillus (1802-1806). The travel distance between Sennett (Brutus) and Elbridge (Camillus) in 2003 is about five miles. One recording of his settlement is that in 1797 he settled 'about one mile east' of Sennett.

A living couple was married before 1773. Living (private).

Hezekiah FREEMAN-1207 and Living had the following children:
Isaac FREEMAN5 was born about 1773.
John FREEMAN-1215.
Silas FREEMAN-942.
