John was born in the county of Monmouth New Jersey and was the third lineal descendant of Edward Taylor of England one of the emigrants for civil and religious liberty, during the reign of James II. Before the war of the Revolution he settled in Charlton, Saratoga County, New York and was a farmer by occupation, a member of the Presbyterian Church, Charlton Town Supervisor and a Justice of the Peace.
