Richard Charles Knapp was the son of Robert H. and Marjorie (Anderson) Knapp. He was a 1965 graduate of Warren Harding High School and had been employed by the State Highway Department's Cortland District Office for a year before entering the U.S. Army in July 1968. He was shipped to South Vietnam in July 1969.
On 29 January 1970, Staff Sergeant Richard Charles Knapp was serving with C Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam.
On that day, SSG Knapp was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
