According to "Entering Howard County" by Marion Bahensky and Ron Sack, page 138

"Many deaths were reported from scarlet fever. Four Sumovich children died in one week at Elba, and that bereavement was followed the next week by the death of their mother. Due to the strict quarantine laws of the time, the father could not attend the funeral services."

From the St. Paul Republican, March 8, 1906, page 8, transcribed by Linda Berney:

The Charles Sumovich family are having a hard siege of scarlet fever, three more of their children having died since last week.
One girl, age 6 years old died Saturday night, a little boy 1 1/2 years old died Sunday and a 3-year-old girl died Tuesday night.
In each case interment was made in the Catholic cemetery the following day. At this writing the four remaining children are getting along nicely, being on the road to recovery. Mrs. Sumovich has been seriously ill, but is now slightly better. This stricken family have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their hour of grief.
