A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Columbia, Lancaster County, August 22, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg sometime during the following October as a private with Co. K, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer January 1, 1864, at Blaines Crossroads, Virginia, but died in Harrisburg from a fever that caused delirium.
