Second Caliph of Rashidun Caliphate. Born between 586 and 590, he was assinated November 7, 644 by Pirouz Nahavandi.
Islamic political figure. Umar ibn al-Khattab was a senior companion and father-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and is considered one of the four Rashidun (Rightly Guided) caliphs. Umar was born into a family of the Banu Adi clan at Mecca in modern Saudi Arabia sometime in the year 584 C.E. He was unsuccessful in his attempts at being a merchant. In 610 C.E., Muhammad declared himself a Messenger of Allah and began to preach a new religion, Islam. Umar, like most of his kinsmen, was initially hostile to Muhammad over his preaching, even threatening to kill Muhammad at one point. However, in 616 C.E., Umar embraced Islam and became a close companion of Muhammad. His daughter, Hafsah, later married Muhammad, making Umar a father-in-law to the prophet. After Muhammad's death in 632 C.E, another close companion and father-in-law to Muhammad, Abu Bakr, was chosen to be the political leader (caliph) of the Muslim ummah (community). Abu Bakr ruled for a little over two years and died in 634 C.E, but not before naming Umar as his successor. On 23 August 634 C.E., Umar was made the second caliph of the Muslim ummah. During his rule, he oversaw the military expansion of the caliphate into the Levant, Persia, Palestine, and Egypt. On 31 October 644 C.E., a Persian slave named Piruz Nahavandi (also known as Abu Lulu) attacked Umar and stabbed him multiple times while he was leading prayers in the mosque. Nahavandi then attacked several Muslims attempting to capture him before turning the blade on himself and committing suicide. Umar died of his wounds three days later on 3 November 644 C.E. He was buried in Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (The Mosque of the Prophet) next to Muhammad and Abu Bakr.
