William Walton Bates lived in Brady Texas for 80 of his 82 years. He owned a farm, which he worked with his sons. He and his wife moved into a smaller home after retirement, which was in town.

He is the son of William Andrew Bates and Laura Knight, widow of James Seale. His father married Alice Utopia Holder after the death of Laura Knight.

His mother, Laura, is a daughter of Lewis Knight and his wife, Emilie Crain.

On 2 October 1909 at Lampasas, Texas, William married Sara Frances Benoist, who later remained his widow for 25 years.
She was known as Frances - she was 16 and he, 28, at their marriage.

They raised nine children; they are:
