Jacksonville - John Robinson Harkreader Sr. (1892-1947), age 55, well-known newspaper man, died very suddenly of a heart attack at a local hotel Saturday afternoon.
Mr. Harkreader came here from Sebring a few days ago and had planned to make his home in Jacksonville at the time of his death.
A native of Wilson county, Tenn., and a member of one of its oldest families, he began his journalistic career, as a reporter for The Nashville (Tenn.) Banner.
Since coming to Florida in 1931 he had served as editor of the former Volusia County Democrat, the Inverness Chronicle, the Highlands County News at Sebring, had been employed on the staff of the DeLand Sun-News and was formerly in charge of the DeLand Bureau of The Florida Times-Union.
A veteran of the first World War, he had served in France as a first lieutenant of Infantry and was severely gassed while on front line duty.
Mr. Harkreader is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Henry McKellar of St. Petersburg; a son, John R. Harkreader, Jr., U.S. Navy, San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Miss Julia Harkreader and three brothers, Charles and William Harkreader of Lebanon, Tenn., and H. D. Harkreader, of Jacksonville, formerly of Palatka,.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Kyle Chapel, Jacksonville, with Rev. A. H. Johnson, of the Church of Christ, officiating. The remains were brought to Palatka Wednesday afternoon for burial in Oak Hill East Cemetery. The local pallbearers were, R. E. MacDonald, P. B. Huff, B. C. Pearce, Frank Sapp, C. G.
