DR. READ, DENTIST, DIES AT 71
Dr. Ervin C. Read, 71, of 315 W. 20th St., prominant Long Beach dentist and clubman since 1917, died Saturday.
He was the first orthodontist in Long Beach; charter member of the Long Beach Dental Society and its president in 1918; member of the American Dental Association, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and American Association of Orthodontists. He graduated from Northwestern dentistry college in 1901.
A member of the Rotary Club 25 years, he had 23 years perfect attendance.
Prominant in lawn bowling circles, he recently visited England, Ireland, and Scotland as representative of Pacific Coast lawn bowlers, after winning in competition here.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Surviving are sons Herbert C., Los Angeles, and Walter E., Lynnwood; nephew Joseph C., Long Beach, and four grandsons.
Services will be held Tuesday, 1:30 p. m., at Patterson & Snively Chapel with Dr. George W. McDonald and Rev. Russell Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.

PIONEER LOCAL DENTIST DIES
Dr. Ervin C. Read, 71, of 316 W. 20th St., pioneer orthodontist and well known dentist, died yesterday in a local hospital following a major operation.
A native of Ogden, Iowa, Dr. Read was graduated from the School of Dentistry, Northwestern University, in 1901, and practiced dentistry for several years in Idaho Falls, Idaho, before moving to Long Beach in 1917. He established offices in the Farmers & Merchants Bank Building and was the first orthodontist in Long Beach. He was a charter member of the Long Beach Dental Society and served as its president in 1918. He also belonged to the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists; the American Dental Association, and the American Association of Orthodontists. Dr. Read was an early member of the Rotary Club and held the distinction of 23 years of perfect attendance. He also was active in the Long Beach Lawn Bowling Club at Recreation Park. He won the high score to represent the Pacific Coast lawn bowling clubs in the international competition, and recently had returned from a tour of clubs in England, Scotland, and Ireland. He was a leading member of the First Methodist Church.
Surviving are his sons Herbert C. Read, Los Angeles, and Walter E. Read of Lynwood; a nephew, Joseph C. Read, Long Beach; and four grandsons. Services will be held today at 1:30 p. m. in the chapel of Patterson & Snively Mortuary, Dr. George W. McDonald, retired pastor of First Methodist Church, and Rev. Russell R. Robinson, assistant pastor of First Church, officiating. Internment will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery, in the family plot.
