John D. Chapman mustered into the Union Army on Sep. 6, 1864, at St. Joseph MO., as a Private in Company F, 43rd MO Infantry Volunteers, under Captain Flint. 43rd Regiment was on duty in the District of Northern Missouri until April, 1865. It took part in an action at Booneville, Mo., October 9 and 12, 1864, at Brunswick on October 11 and in the Battle of Glasgow on October 15, 1864 (6 Companies). Then, it operated against guerrillas in District of Central Missouri until June, 1865. Affair Little Blue River, March 11, 1865 (Detachment). Skirmish, Star House, near Lexington, May 4, 1865 (Detachment). Private J. D. Chapman got cholera. Mustered out 30 Jun 1865, Benton Barracks, MO.
A farmer in Benton Twp, Daviess Co., he married Josephine Morris (1846-1900) in 1867. In 1894, J. D., his wife and their surviving 6 (of 9) children moved to a farm in Walnut Twp., Atchison Co., Kansas. In 1902, he married Mrs. Emma Clem and in 1917, he sold their farm and moved to Atchison, Atchison.
