James L. Bertrand, 96, of 527 W. Erie St., Spring Valley died at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 24, 2012, in St. Margaret's Hospital, Spring Valley.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Barto Funeral Home, Spring Valley, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Spring Valley. The Rev. Robert Spilman will officiate. Burial will be at Valley Memorial Park, Spring Valley.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with an American Legion service at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Bertrand was born June 24, 1916, in Spring Valley to Louis J. and Catherine (Schneider) Bertrand. He married Mary Zupancic on June 29, 1941, in St. Roch Catholic Church, La Salle.

He served in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant during World War II in the 442nd Field Artillery Combat Battalion in the European Theater. He was awarded two Bronze Stars.

He worked for Steinberg's Furniture as a floor installer until his retirement. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Carpenters Local 195 and the Spring Valley American Legion.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Bertrand of Spring Valley; three sons, James Bertrand and Joseph Bertrand, both of Spring Valley, and Jeffrey (Becky) Bertrand of Pontiac; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Balzarine and Celina Ponsetti Terando; and three brothers, Balthazar, John and Joseph.
