James was the son of Hiram and Permelia J. Smith Carmer. She was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Lossie Smith. Hiram's parents are unknown.

James was a long time farmer and in 1920 Yipsilanti was found still working at the age of 76 as a laborer for the Electric Railroad, as was one of his son in laws, Claude C. Wilber as a Motorman.
