MARTHA RITCHIE DARWIN
To Be Laid to Rest in Aspen Grove Monday Afternoon.
She Had Been a Resident of Burlington Some Seventy Years
Martha Ritchie Darwin was born in Maysville, Ky., August 24, 1837. She was the daughter of the late C. W. Ritchie, and came with her parents to Burlington in 1842. Her early education was received in the private school of Mrs. M. A. P. Darwin. She was married to George F. Darwin, a practicing attorney, who died a few years later, leaving one daughter, Anna R. Darwin, who still survives. For a number of years after her husband’s death Mrs. Darwin conducted a private school on North Hill, where she has made her home for more than seventy years. Early in life she became a member of the Congregational church, of which he [sic] father was one of the organizers and many years a deacon. Those who knew her best loved her for her sunny disposition, her great love for little children, her earnest Christian life and her ability to see the bright lining in the darkest cloud. She is the last member of the C. W. Ritchie family of eleven children. Her father and family well be remembered by many of Burlington’s older citizens for their integrity and worth.
Mrs. Darwin passed away Friday evening at 9:45 at the family home, No. 813 North Eighth street, after a short illness. Funeral services will be held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Friends are invited to these services. The interment will be private.
