Roy Otis Barnes, a life-long resident of St. Augustine, born Feb. 14, 1923, passed away peacefully at Flagler Hospital Friday, Oct. 28, 2011.
Roy was a loving father and family man. He was also a patriot whose devotion to his country, his place of birth, its history, his ancestors, far-flung relatives, and his friends kept him going in his last years as his health declined. Roy was a loving husband to Ellie, his wife of 63 years, and it was his final wish to his children for them to care for her.
During his youth he developed his love of flying and used this passion in the military and in years beyond. Over the years Roy served this city in various ways: director and treasurer of the St. Augustine Historical Society, president of the St. Augustine Board of Realtors, the St. Augustine City Zoning Board, the Rotary Club, and charter member and president of the Independent Luncheon Club.
In addition to the above, Roy researched his family history, reconnecting with various branches of the family in other states, sharing old photos and information with them. He did the same with the Historical Society, the Minorcan Cultural Society, and St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine, which displays some of his earliest ancestors' history.
Roy is survived by his devoted wife, Eleanor, and his four children: Nancy Huppert, Roy Barnes Jr., and Mary Barnes, all of St. Augustine; and Florence Barnes, of Santa Fe, N.M.
Having lived his life with diligence, honesty, caring - but not without humor, even in the final weeks, he has now been released from the restrictive bonds of age and illness, and rests forever in peace.
The visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Craig Funeral Home, with the service on Friday at 11 a.m., also at Craig Funeral Home, with internment at Evergreen Cemetery directly following.
Flowers are gratefully declined, but those who wish may make a contribution in his name in support of our wounded Veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project.
Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
