Serving as a volunteer in the Imperial Army from 1588 fighting against the Turks, he captured a standard from them at Gran in Hungary and was created a Count of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Rudolph II 1595. On his return to England he met an adverse reaction to his new dignity, being committed to the Fleet Prison for two months and banished from court. He was later knighted ca. 1598, and made Baron Arundell of Wardour on May 4, 1605.
