Hazel Gunter Norton

Died: March 15, 2010

Hazel Gunter Norton, 87, of Greeneville, died Monday afternoon at her home.

Born Jan. 29, 1923, in Cocke County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Mabel Gunter.

She and her family lived in Madison County, N.C., for several years in the White Rock and Walnut areas and then settled in Greeneville in 1963.

Ms. Norton retired from Greene Valley Developmental Center after 24 years of service.

The family provided the following statement: "Our 'Mom' was the greatest and most self-sacrificing of anyone that we have ever known. As it is time now to say goodbye to her, we pray that each of us live a life that would exemplify her role in our lives.

"She was a very devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother."

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law: Eva Joyce and Guy V. Tweed Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Nancy Ruth and Jimmy Waddell of Limestone, Virginia Sue and George Payne of Greeneville, and Marsha Jewel Newton of Greeneville; her sons and daughters-in-law: Jerry Roger and Faye Norton of Chuckey and Grady Dwight "Kinger" and Doris Norton of Charlotte; her grandchildren: Shannon Norton Ledford, David Shipley, Gena Shipley, Marsha Tweed Frick, Myra Tweed Brown, Kimberly Smith Cutshaw, Kelly Hensley Helton, and Dr. Chris Hensley; eight stepgrandchildren: Johnathan Shelton, Jimmy Waddell, Paula Cox, Tommy Payne, Tina Albert, Annette Payne, Robin Stephens, and Doug Starrett; her great-grandchildren: Josh Ledford, Natasha Gruabh, Nicky Cutshaw, Emma Kate Helton, Kori Smith, Ryan Frick, Mary Frick, and Dayton Brown; one stepgreat-grandson: Cayden Shelton; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Flora Gunter Hux and Zola Mae and the Rev. Paul Jennings, all of Parrottsville; one brother and sister-in-law: Bruce and Fayetta Gunter of White Pine; two sisters-in-law: Blanch "Lady" Gunter of Parrottsville and Mildred Gunter of Greeneville; one brother-in-law: Police Norton of Jonesborough; several nieces and nephews; a former son-in-law and special friend of the family: JL Newton of Greeneville; special caregivers: Jewel Guinn, Jennifer Dunn, Dr. James Rodgers, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice.

She was preceded in death by her former husband: Joe C. Norton; two brothers: Sherman Gunter and Jay Gunter; and one sister: Frances Cook.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

The funeral service will follow visitation at 8 o'clock the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Jonathan Jones and the Rev. Gerald Rudd will officiate.

A committal service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 to travel in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be David White, Tim Garner, Rick Smith, Jackie McCrary, Steve Burns, and Ronnie Waddell.
