In 1883, Artie moved with her parents and siblings to Charles Mix County, South Dakota, where the family homesteaded.
In 1887 she was united in marriage with Herbert Samuel Smith and set up household in Castalia, Charles Mix County, SD where they ran a hotel. To this union six children were born: Walter Sheldon, Henry Clay, Hazel Elizabeth, Gladys Mary, Helen DeEtta, and Herbert Arthur.
In about 1904 the family moved to Woodland, Yolo County, California, where Herbert prospered selling sewing machines. All three sons would eventually graduate from the University of California at Berkeley, where all played on the football team. However, tragedy struck the family twice, first when five-year-old Helen died in 1905 of diphtheria, and again in 1907 when nine-year-old Gladys died of acute Bright's disease (nephritis).
Artie and Herbert went their separate ways sometime before 1920 and were later divorced. Artie lived the rest of her life in Oakland, California, as did two of her sons and her eldest daughter.
At the time of her death, Artie was survived by one daughter, three sons, four grandchildren, two great-granchildren, two brothers and two sisters.
