Ray entered the Rhode Island Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Wallum Lake at about the age of 19. He was cured (and had a ling removed) and like many other survivors, he trained as a medical professional ( a blood tech ) and remained at the hospital. He lived on the grounds until he married a local teacher in 1952. His name was put on the McCarthy family headstone because he wasn't expected to live but he isn't buried there. He fooled them all and made it to age 80! He is buried in Pascoag with his wife's family.
