Irving A. Storsved

Irving A. Storsved, 83, Hendrum, MN, and Aberdeen, WA, died Friday, September 28, 2012 at his home under the care of hospice.
Irving was born on the Thore Venn farm in Hendrum Township on April 18, 1929, the fifth child of eight children of John A. and Rachel (Ven) Storsved. Although baptized May 26, 1929 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, he was confirmed May 23, 1943 in the Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, rural Hendrum. He attended the Hendrum Schools, with the exception of one and half years in the rural "Viking" School, District #2. He graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1947 from Hendrum High School. From graduation through the end of 1948, he served in the Regular United States Army with the Second Infantry Division. Irving was united in marriage to Mavis Eileen Holland on 4 July 1950. Until 1954 he was employed by Canning Farms and the American Crystal Sugar Company. On February 10, 1954 he began employment with the Norman County Highway Department. He earned his diploma in Highway Engineering in October of 1966 from the International Correspondence Schools, Scranton, Pennsylvania. He retired in 1988 after 34 years as Assistant County Highway Engineer. In 1963, he built a new home on Rice Street South in Hendrum, where the family has lived since 1954.

Irving gave freely of his time to civic and social organizations: 33 years' service as an officer of the Hendrum Volunteer Fire Department and its Fire Department Relief Association; 22 years as an officer of the Hendrum Community Park; past president, teacher, cemetery Sexton since 1989, and videographer of Immanuel Lutheran Church; Golden life member of Nordland Lodge #492, Sons of Norway; Gudbrandsdalslaget; Tronderlaget of America; Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion; past Master Alpha Lodge #230 AF & AM; Moorhead Lodge #126 AF & AM; North Dakota York Rites; El Zagal Shrine Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Fargo; Mobile Nobles of El Zagal; past president of the Heart of the Red River Valley Shrine Club of Ada; past president Tri-State Forester Camper Club; and Boy Scout merit badge counselor. In the early 1980's he set up and operated Channel "5," a local access television channel. This enabled the community to view hundreds of videos of church services and school athletic events that he filmed as a member of the Norman County West Booster Club.

Irving developed a love for travel early in life. He traveled extensively by motorhome throughout the USA. He visited Europe, the Holy Land, Africa, South America, China, the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska. He acquired an interest in genealogy and devoted over thirty years to this as a hobby. He made over ten research trips to Norway, where he enjoyed looking up and visiting with relatives. In 2000, he assisted in developing the largest family reunion ever held in the country of Norway. On 20 May 2003, Irving married Yvette May Koerner of Aberdeen, Washington. Their wedding was held in the Hopperstad Stav Church replica in Moorhead, Minnesota.
