According to the Elmwood Burial Index he was killed at Atlanta on May 24, 1864. He was interred in Elmwood on May 11, 1866.

The remains of the late Captain john W. Harris arrived in the city yesterday, and will be interred at Elmwood Cemetery tomorrow. Captain Harris was Inspector General on Pres. Smith's staff, and as gallant an brave soldier as ever drew the breath of life. He fell at the battle of Ellerslie Mountain, Ga., in the retreat from Dalton to Atlanta.
