John Beals was born in the 5th month of 1744 (Old Style) in Frederick County, VA, to John and Margaret (Hunt) Beals. He married about 1760 to Sarah Dicks (1743-1777), daughter of Peter and Elizabeth. This marriage was childless. He married secondly the 30th of 12th mo 1778 at New Garden Friends Meeting to Susana Johnson (1752-1849) daughter of James and Margaret (Cook) Johnson. They were the parents of ten children: Sarah, John, Margaret, William, Bowater, Caleb, Jesse, Peter, Eleazar, and Hannah. His death is recorded in the New Garden Meeting records as occurring on 24th of 4th mo 1809, and the records further indicate that he was buried at New Garden. His grave is unmarked after the manner of early Friends.
