Deceased was a son of Clark and Rebecca St. John and was born in Wade county, Missouri, March 1, 1848. His boyhood days were spent in Wade County. On August 6, 1864 he enlisted in the 47th Missouri infantry at the age of 16 serving until March, 1865, when he was honorably discharged from the service.
After the close of the war, he moved to Vandalia, IL where he was united in marriage with Miss Minerva Mayfield, who died at Vandalia one year after their marriage. Later he was married to Mary Poland, who died a number of years ago. There were eleven children in the family, who are living as follows: Charles and John P St. John, Eva May St. John, Mrs. Addie Allman and Mrs. Effie Shields, Hillsboro and Clarence St. John who went to the Klondike during the gold rush in 1897, and who never returned. He also leaves four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased moved to Hillsboro 52 years ago and was one of the veteran coal miners who began work at the old Hillsboro coal mine when the shaft was first sunk. He followed the occupation as a miner for many years until he became crippled as the result of an accident when he was forced to retire from work.
Funeral services will be conducted at the family residence on Elm street at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Ezra Keller, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church in Hillsboro officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mr. St. John was for many years a member of the Congregational Church in Hillsboro until that organization ceased to exist. Members of the GAR in Hillsboro, Spanish War veterans, veterans of the World War and patriotic organizations will attend the services.
